I grew up in Hawai‘i—
born of the Pacific and raised within the cultures that were born from its waters.
I write about my own, and our collective, inheritance. What forged our present-day realities, and what vision is possible for the future, and what would we have to do today to cultivate that vision for our descendants?
I come from mixed descendants of farmers & fishermen who survived and persisted and persevered through centuries of occupation & colonization, whose arrival here is inseparable from the US imperial history that shaped the Pacific— I was born to a place that was both home and a distant echo.
I was born and raised in Hawai'i; as the eldest daughter, of an eldest daughter, of an eldest daughter. Matriarchy was a contradicting idea in my everyday life, but with the passing of my grandmother, I recognized that it was a calling to move differently in this world, in my own life.
That history of land and kinship relational identity in the face of displacement, diaspora, violence, perseverance, healing, and hope — is not background for me. It is an Inheritance. The question with any inheritance, is what we do with it, and how it seeds the next generation's inheritance.
